Getting more with less? Why repowering onshore wind farms does not always lead to more wind power generation – A German case study

The best wind locations are nowadays often occupied by old, less efficient and relatively small turbines. Many of them will soon reach the end their operating lifetime, or lose financial support. Therefore, repowering comes to fore. However, social acceptance land use restrictions have been under constant change since initial expansions, which makes area available for new turbines, even on existing sites. For example Germany, this study assesses potential onshore energy in high detail, basis regionally differentiated eligibility criteria. results show that given regional criteria, decrease both capacity annual yield roughly 40% compared status quo. This is because around half turbines currently located restricted areas, newly enacted exclusion Sensitivity analyses criteria minimum distance discontinuous urban fabric most sensitive criterion determining number can be repowered. As regulations vary substantially across different regions, location-specific methodology chosen here assess more realistically than approaches.
